Temple records, 1853-1988.

The collection consists of records of the Temple (Atlanta, Ga.) and its predecessor, the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation from 1853-1988. The records include Board of Trustees minutes, annual reports, publications, committee records, financial records, membership records, and scrapbooks. Of particular interest are files documenting the 1958 bombing of the Synagogue; a personal diary (1915) of Leo Frank and newspaper clippings relating to his trial and conviction; correspondence of Rabbis David M. Marx and Jacob M. Rothschild; and the marriage, membership, and cemetery records which provide genealogical information. The records contain information about the Temple's youth group, Sisterhood, and schools. In addition, there are numerous family files which contain biographical and genealogical information about many of the Temple's members.

Leo Frank, a Jewish Atlanta businessman and Superintendent and Vice President of the National Pencil Factory, Atlanta, Georgia, was born 17 April 1884, in Paris, Texas, and died 17 August 1915, in Marietta, Georgia.
